Imo Heritage: A Discourse on the "Jewel of the South".
Life can be well understood when it is likened to the rhythmic flow and pattern of a song. It is either the tone rises and falls or it falls and rises. Whichever, way, people get entertained, informed and educated. Just like the rhythmic pattern of poems, nations rise and fall and also grow and decay. But in all these, one thing do not change and that is the peoples" cultural heritage. Though it most of its element could be tampered with but It stands the test of time and regardless of the effect of external influences on it, it still testifies to the credibility of its origin and peoples. The fact that Imo State today is known for unrivaled chaos and untamable violence and insecurity does not take away the notion that the State otherwise known as the Eastern is equally known for its social dynamism especially when it comes to nightlife, extravagant cruise and enjoyment. Known as the Eastern Heartland and also for its busy nightlife in the entire Southeastern Nigeria, with diverse traditions and lifestyles, Imo State is a home that is worth to be called home regardless of what it has turned out to be at present. People from Imo State (Imolitea), especially those from Owerri are known for their extravagance which is even extended to the food they eat. Thus, it is against this backdrop that introduce us to a special delicacy that fits for an outstanding sociocultural representation of the good people of Imo State - OFE OWERRI. The soup called Ofe Owerri is named after Imo State's capital - Owerri and it originated from the Owerri zone of Imo State. It is a delicacy that is meant for royalties, men and women of timber and calibre. It is a culinary symbol of affluence, prestige and honour. When a man or woman prepares this delicacy for his or her guests, be rest assured that it is a sign of unreserved loyalty, honour. and love. Ofe Owerri is nicknamed "Jewel of the South" because it is one of the most expensive delicacies to prepare in Igbo land. Little wonder Sir Warrior asserted in one of his songs "Can someone without money eat Ofe Owerri"? Although, this question was directed at the quality of the soup as at when it was sang, it is interesting to note that today that same question has been extended to mean that one who does not have money cannot go for quality things including beautiful and amazingly gorgeous well-built and structured women. As a traditional delicacy, Ofe Owerri is prepared with the following ingredients: 1. Assorted meats preferably cow meat (Anu EFI) 2. Snails (Eju) 3. Dried fish (Azu Okpo/Mangala) 4. Stock fish (Okporoko) 5. Cocoyam (Ede) 6. Vegetabls (Ugu na Ukazi) 7. Locust beans (Ogiri) 8. Palm oil (Mmanu nni) 9. Brachystegia (Achi) 10. Onions, Crayfish, Fresh pepper, Salt, Water 11. It can be eaten with garri, fufu, semovita or any other chosen 'swallow" of one's choice. Without mincing words, Ofe Owerri tastes so fantastic such that people who eat it always regret not eaten it again and again. It is not only a quality delicacy but also a significant cultural tool that edifies the body and soul of all Imolites, home and abroad.
